| I wanted to include some of my rebuttals to the school
administrators most popular reasons for splitting multiples (I realize
these apply to my children specifically, but I just wanted to put them
out in the open for all to use): "They need to grow as individuals."
- My children ARE individuals. Please treat them as individuals
rather than lumping them into the general category of "twins". As identicals, they can express their individuality more if they are
together with one teacher who can learn to tell the differences between
them rather than splitting them between 2 teachers where neither one
will be able to tell the apart. Some of the students will learn the
differences between the girls if they are both in their class as well.
"They will get too competitive." - My daughters have never been
competitive against one another. Sometimes they "compete" as a team,
with only joy for the one who wins and "good jobs" for the other. They
have never expressed any anger or aggression at having the other one
win. I don't see how this applies to our situation.
"They will be too dependant on one another." - So does that mean I
should leave my husband, deny my parents and dump my children? We are
all very dependant on one another, that is what helps us grow as
individuals and as humans! Yes, if something happens to my husband I
will be devastated, but I would never change my relationship just so I
won't be so "dependant" on him. I am a much better person because of
him. The same way my daughters are much stronger and lead much fuller
lives because they have each other and they have their brother as well.
In our case, my daughters do not play exclusively with one another.
They have many friends in school and in the neighborhood they play with.
"I have children 2 years apart, so I know what it's like to have
multiples." - (I have to give them the "you've GOT to be kidding"
look.) I have children 2 years apart also, just when I had the
second birth two children came out. (My son is 2 years older than my
twin girls.)
